Vasilis Marmarelis, professor of biomedical engineering, received a new NIH grant on model-based diagnosis of early Alzheimer’s disease (5-year, $10 million, 3 universities). Prof. Marmarelis will serve as the coordinating PI among the three institutions.
The three participating Alzheimer’s Disease centers (USC-Keck, UT-SWMC at Dallas, and UKMC at Kansas) will collect the data that will be analyzed in Marmarelis’ lab using the advanced modeling methodologies that he and his associates have developed at the USC Biomedical Simulations Resource (BMSR) over the years. This research may have a good chance to offer a much better diagnostic method for early Alzheimer’s Disease to the worldwide community in desperate need to manage a menacing health problem, and prove, at the same time, the fundamental value of sophisticated dynamic modeling in medicine.
