Probabilistic Estimates of Network Completeness: Creating an IT Resource
The Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC) seeks a student who is a skilled computer programmer with solid knowledge of Python and Linux to work with project scientists during this school year.

Project Overview
Seismic instrument networks record earthquake ground motion and archive these data. The numbers and locations of instruments in a network vary over time, and consequently earthquake data collections are incomplete. For example, smaller earthquakes may go undetected if there are no seismic stations nearby; the farther away the stations are, the larger the earthquake needs to be for detection. In other words, detection capabilities of a seismic network are a function of space and time. Because the occurrence of earthquakes provides important insight into earthquake properties and
hazard, we need to estimate the “completeness” of seismic network data at any given place or time.

Student Project Goals
1) To create a database of completeness values in space and time for California networks and
2) To create a programming API such that researchers can either access this database or compute the values on their computers on the fly.

This will become a resource for SCEC and the Advanced National Seismic System. The student will not produce completeness values but rather create tools to access or compute such values. The student must also write basic documentation for all code created.

Needed Student Knowledge
- Linux operating system (required)
- Python language (required)
- XML (optional/desirable)
- Database principles (optional/desirable)
- Matlab (optional/desirable)
- Seismology or earthquake recording (optional/desirable)

Timeframe and Renumeration

We seek an enrolled USC student (undergraduate or M.S. level) who can work 10-20 hours per week on this project during Fall and Spring semesters and up to 40 hours per week during winter and spring breaks, for a maximum of 400 hours. Pay rate is $20/hour, with a completion bonus of $1000 if the tools and documentation exist before the project deadline next spring. The deadline will be set based on the student’s starting date and weekly hours.

To Apply for this Job
Deliver a hard copy (paper) resume to ZHS 169 during normal working hours. Position is open until filled. During October we will interview the
candidates with the skills that most closely match our needs. We will notify all candidates of their status no later than October 31. Send questions to perry@usc.edu.
