Project Title: Study of Long-term Changes in Autonomic Function and Insulin Resistance Following Recurrent Exposure to Intermittent Hypoxia

Research Statement:

Sleep-disorder breathing (SDB) is known to associate with the development of insulin resistance and increase in sympathetic activities. However, most subjects with SDB additionally suffer from obesity, which can also contribute to insulin resistance and abnormalities in autonomic controls. The objective of this study is to determine the effect of intermittent hypoxia and hyperglycemia on cardiovascular autonomic control independent of obesity. To achieve this goal, we employed a lean, chronically instrumented mouse model and analyzed pulse interval variability and arterial pressure variability from the measurement data in order to assess the long-term changes in the cardiovascular autonomic control.
