Project Title: Extending an Integrative Model of Cardiovascular and Respiratory Control System to Interactions with Metabolic Control and Simulation of Disease Progression.
Research Statement:
We have developed an integrative computational model of the cardiorespiratory system and related neural control mechanisms in adult humans as
PNEUMA. Currently, we incorporate into
PNEUMA the ability to simulate forced expiratory flow under a variety of lung conditions, including pathological changes that occur with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We also develop a whole-body physiologically-based pharmacokinetic model to predict the concentration of β2-agonists in organs such as the knowledge of β2-agonists deposition in the respiratory tract through simulated FEV1 results. To integrate the metabolic function into
PNEUMA, we are developing an extended minimal model of glucose insulin with free fatty acid under the regulation of epinephrine.
