Project Title: Biological Rhythm of Autonomic Function in Sleep-Disordered Breathing

Research Statement:

Sleep-Disordered Breathing (SDB) is known to be the cause of several cardiovascular-celebrovascular diseases. The underlying mechanism of the causal link is however not explicitly understood. The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristic of the nocturnal autonomic control variation, which is considered to be a descriptor of the abnormal sympatho-vagal function. Based upon the Sleep Heart Health Study (SHHS) database, the respiratory signal (res), sleep level (delta), arousal intensity (arousal) and the non-invasive autonomic markers (LHR, HFP, NHFP, MeanRR) were computed throughout the night. The multiple inputs (res, delta, and arousal) single output (LHR or HFP or NHFP or MeanRR) models were constructed. The new respiratory-adjusted indices were developed as one part of the model. The other part was built in the linear dual inputs single output structure (DISO ARX model). Unfortunately, this method inefficiently explain the variation of the data. New mathematical model is being explored for more accurate results.
