Professor Kirk Shung Receives 2008 Viterbi School Senior Research Award

April 29, 2008 — Professor Kirk Shung was named today as a recipient of the 2008 Viterbi School Senior Research Award. Dr. Shung was cited as "one of the true pioneers of biomedical ultrasonics". His seminal contributions to the field include the development of a predictive model for elucidating the mechanisms underlying the acoustic scattering properties of red blood cells, and more recently, the development of novel, high-frequency ultrasonic transducers and arrays for biomedical applications. He leads a team that has is recognized as the top academic group in high frequency ultrasonic array design in the world today. This special expertise is clearly recognized by the National Institutes of Health, which has funded the Medical Ultrasonic Transducer Resource Center continuously with a large P41 center grant since 1996.
