Introduction to Psychophysical Experimentation
Reading for Today:
Handout on Psychophysics
Argle, Bargle, Fargle!
This is what happened in class today
(10-22-97).
Please be familiar with the following concepts:
-
Sound intensity discrimination in its dynamic range (Roughly 10 dB to 120 dB)
-
General note for the exam: if your answer is far above this range, you probably have the wrong answer. A sound pressure level (SPL) on the order of 5000 dB would probably destroy Los Angeles.
-
ULL (Uncomfortably Loud Level, around 120 dB)
-
Weber's Law
-
Weber's Fraction
-
Phon (this is a perceived level of loudness. e.g., 40 phons = a sound at a given frequency perceived to be as loud as a 1 KHz tone at 40 dB. Some other guy might perceive the exact same sound to be louder or softer).
-
Equal-loudness contour map
-
Sone (another subjective scale. This is more arbitrary. If a given sound is assigned a value of 1 sone, then a sound that is perceived to be twice as loud would be given a value of 2 sones.)
-
Stephen's Loudness Funciton
