BME 403 Respiratory Section Extra Credit Project Due Wednesday, Oct. 1 by 5:00 pm Howdy, Gunners! The goals of this assignment are: 1. To get you more points toward your final grade. 2. To help you go over certain topics in-depth before the exam, so that you'll ace those questions next Friday. 3. To help build the class web page so that other BME 403 students can learn from your teachings for years to come. You will be given two basic topics to explicate for the web page. You DO NOT need to know HTML to do this assignment. Please just word-process your answers in plain text. For each topic, here's what you should turn in: 1. The URL address (e.g., http://this.is.an.example.com) of at least 1 web page relevant to your topic. The more relevant, the better (e.g., if your topic is "hysteresis," then a page dedicated to hysteresis is better than a page that mentions it while discussing butterflies). 2. A brief (1 sentence or so) definition of the topic (e.g., "an infarct is a locus of irreversible tissue damage resulting from hypoxia.") 3. A longer (around 2 or 3 paragraphs) description of why the topic is important and relevant to physiology and to this course. 4. Any relevant equations (See the appendix in the back of West). 5. At least one example of the type of problem that might show up on an exam that involve your topic. Your sample problems must be original, but feel free to use some of the old test questions (e.g., 1995 or 1996) as general templates. Please also include answers to the problems you submit. 6. For some of you, your topics may require some form of visual image to illustrate your descriptions. I leave this to your judgment if you think it is needed or not. 7. Your e-mail address and web page URL, if you got 'em. Projects will be graded on completeness, clarity, and accuracy. This project cannot hurt your grade, but a well-written assignment will help your grade more than a poorly-written one. Please turn in your assignment on a Mac or IBM floppy disk, in Microsoft Word format or in text file (.txt) format. Alternatively, you may e-mail your assignment to jmiles@hsc.usc.edu. If you choose to include images, please either paste the images into the Word file, or submit them in JPEG, GIF, TIFF, PICT, or BMP format. Alternatively, you may simply turn in a paper copy (for images only - not for text). I intend to have all of the projects up on the web page by morning on Oct. 2, in time for you and everyone else to benefit from them before the exam. Good luck!
